Research - the living well alone project

Research

Studies of solo living and single life are few and far between – this is still a small and relatively new field. The pioneers in this space are Bella DePaulo, Elyakim Kislev and Eric Klinenburg.

Going Solo

Eric Klinenburg (2012)

Described by the Sunday Times as ‘a groundbreaking book,’ sociologist Eric Klinenburg upends conventional wisdom, showing that not only is solo living on the rise, but it is also an increasingly popular lifestyle choice.

Happy Singlehood

Elyakim Kislev (2019)

Elyakim Kislev challenges readers to rethink how single people organise social and familial ties in new ways, and illuminates how educators, policymakers and urban planners should cater to their needs.

Singled Out

Bella De Paulo (2006)

In this ground-breaking book, world-leading expert Bella De Paulo demonstrates that despite being  systematically stereotyped and stigmatised, singles are actually much happier than most people think.

How We Live Now

Bella DePaulo (2015)

In how we live now, Bella DePaulo challenges our old concepts of what it means to be a family and have a home.
